本書面向普通讀者的國學入門讀物。作者以淺顯流暢的筆觸，首先對國學作了概述，進而分章節對語言文字、史學、哲學、文學、自然科學、藝術及其代表性的人物、派別和學術觀點予以介紹，並作評述。 曹伯韓，（1897—1959），湖南長沙人，當代著名語言學家。曾任香港《華商報》翻譯、桂林《自學》月刊主編、昆明《進修月刊》編輯，後於桂林師范學院任教。新中國成立後，任中國文字改革委員會研究員、第二研究室主任，《中國語文》編委等職。著有《通俗文化與語文》、《中國文字的演變》、《中國文法初階》等語言學專著，以及《國學常識》、《民主淺說》、《通俗社會科學二十講》、《中國近百年史十講》等文化普及讀物。
