傳統中國的對外關係，常以建立以中國為中心的世界秩序為理想，要求鄰邦對中國朝貢。但是朝貢制度不足以涵蓋中國數千年來的外交關係。本書根據豐富的史料和前人的研究，考察宋遼對峙的局勢之下，宋朝對遼外交的特色。當時宋廷不得不採取比較實際的政策，承認與宋勢均力敵的遼朝為兄弟之邦，建立平等的外交關係。著者並且在這一架構上，分析北宋對遼外交的幾次重要交涉。


本書中文初版於1984年出版，此為新版。
