The Story of Papermaking traces the journey of ancient Chinese exploring the media for writing. From pottery script to oracle bone script and bell and cauldron script, the book moves on to the wooden and bamboo slips and silk once used for writing before paper in its real sense was invented by Cai Lun in the Eastern Han Dynasty some nineteen hundred years ago and later perfected as xuan paper, with its one-thousand-year lifespan. The process demonstrates China’s spirit of ceaseless exploration and courageous innovation. Drawing on historical research and using exquisite hand-drawn illustrations, this book depicts the papermaking techniques invented by Cai Lun, detailing each raw material and procedure, which were condensed with the sweat of Chinese diligence and wisdom. The spread of papermaking techniques sped up the propagation of culture while preserving a great deal of the fruits of human civilization. Once papermaking spread all over the world it became an important driving force behind the development of society, history, science and culture.
