本書上承歷代輯佚梳理之成果，自今日殘存《永樂大典》中補苴鉤沉，又輯得婁機《廣干祿字書》、倪鏜《六書類釋》及孫吾與《韻會定正》等十二部清代四庫館臣未留心之小學書，分為字書與韻書兩部分，考證書名、卷數、作者與內容，撰成提要，註明佚文出處。所輯雖不能盡復舊觀，猶可略窺其書梗概。
