《詞學通論》是吳梅在大學教書時的一本講義，也是他的代表作之一。所謂通論，即從各個方面、各個角度來研究詞。歸納起來，主要是論詞與音樂的關係、詞的作法、詞的發展史，以及對詞人及其代表作的評價。第一章「緒論」，談有關詞的幾個重要理論問題。第二至四章，分別為「論平仄四聲」、「論韻」、「論音律」，皆圍繞音樂問題而論詞；第五章談詞之作法；第六至九章，為歷代作家作品論。作者地介紹了詞與音樂的關係、詞的作法以及歷代代表性詞人詞作，並對唐五代以至清季詞學的源流傳承和諸大家詞作的利病得失做了精當的點評。
