"Distributed throughout the headlands and outer islands in the southeastern part of the Sai Kung area of Hong Kong are abundant rhyolite columnar formations with remarkable features. The author has highlighted the spectacular columnar rocks through photographs and detailed descriptions with maps, showing the exact routes to reach the rock formations. Among the thirty scenic routes suggested, six are summit routes with panoramic views of the described areas; the others lead hikers to stunning sights of columnar cliffs. Over half of the routes are challenging, involving paths that are not well defined and may pass through dense bushes, steep rugged slopes, cliff tops and rocky coasts. The described areas are all located within the Sai Kung Volcanic Rock Region of the geopark established a few years ago. The author also suggests concrete ways to improve accessibility, the bushy environment, the walking trails and facilities of these areas in the hope of bringing positive effects on the future sustained development of the Hong Kong Global Geopark of China.
