班宗華（Richard Barnhart）是美國有代表性的中國畫史研究學者，《行到水窮處》文集收錄了他致力畫史研究以來的20篇重要論文，主要集中於宋畫，兼及元、明及中西交流與影響，既有早年之作，也有新近的文章，展現出他對中國早期繪畫的鑒定問題以及歐美收藏中國繪畫史的持續關注，較為全面地反應了其畢生的治學思路與成果，可資國內讀者借鑒。

班宗華（Richard Barnhart），1934年生人，1963年獲斯坦福大學學士，1966年獲普林斯頓大學碩士，1967年獲普林斯頓大學博士。作為美國傑出的中國藝術史學者，班宗華先后執教於耶魯大學（1967－1975；1979－榮休）、普林斯頓大學（1975－1979），並為印第安納波利斯藝術館（Indianapolis Art Museum）、大都會藝術館（Metropolitan Museum of Art）作顧問指導。其著作《大明的畫家》（Painters of the Great Ming，1994）曾獲得由美國學院藝術協會向博物館學者頒發的阿爾弗雷德?巴爾（Alfred H. Barr, Jr.）獎。
