四書章句集注是朱熹(一一三——一二年)最有代表性的著作之一。朱熹祖述二程的觀點和做法，特別尊崇孟子和禮記中的大學、中庸，使之與論語並列。認為大學中“經”的部分是“孔子之言而曾子述之”。“傳”的部分是“曾子之意而門人記之”，中庸是“孔門傳授心法”而由“子思筆之于書以授孟子”。四者合起來，代表了由孔子經過曾參、子思傳到孟子這樣一個儒家道統，而二程和自己則是這一久已中斷的道統的繼承、發揚者。他為四者分別作了注釋，對大學還區分了經傳並重新編排了章節，作為一套書同時刊行，稱為四子(朱文公文集卷八二有書臨漳所刊四子後一篇，又朱子語類卷一。五雲“四子，六經之階梯”)︰大學、中庸的注釋稱“章句”，論語、孟子的注釋因引用二程、程門弟子及其他人的說法較多，稱“集注”。後人合稱之為四書章句集注，簡稱四書集注。
