2015年，國立政治大學人文中心的「中外關係與近現代中國的形塑」研究團隊正式邁入五年。1月30日舉行年會，以「近代中國外交的大歷史與小歷史」為學術研討會主軸，本書即這次研討會精華所在。本書作者均為外交史領域專家，透過對晚清以來、民國乃至當代議題的關懷，開展對於海關、邊防、戰爭、國際談判等面向的研究。不僅關注外交的大範圍性質，又囊括結構面向發乎至微的歷史事件。不僅關注外交的大範圍性質，又囊括結構面向發乎至微的歷史事件。由於不完全鎖定於外交史習用的上層結構論、精英式史觀進行研究與書寫，故本書用大寫H(History)和小寫h(histories)的概念，命名為：《近代中國外交的大歷史與小歷史》。
